Seminar to launch Global Health Watch report in the Netherlands
The newly published Global Health Watch 2 will be launched in the Netherlands at a seminar entitled 'Health for All in a new global context: challenges and opportunities', at Radboud University, Nijmegen, at 6.00 pm on 25 November. Global Health Watch 2 is the second report published by the People’s Health Movement, Medact, and the Global Equity Gauge Alliance, as a civil society alternative to the World Health Organisation’s annual World Health Report.

Participants of the Belgrade Queer Festival attacked
Four participants of the Belgrade Queer Festival have been brutalized by a group of ten unknown perpetrators. The attacked happened on Friday September 19 in the central part of the capital of Serbia. Two of the victims were foreigners. Queer Belgrade Collective, of which Hivos-partner Labrys in Kyrgyzstan is a member, condemns the homophobic attack.

Hivos-partners victims of violence in Bolivia
Two employees of Hivos-partner COINACAPA lost their lives after gun shots were fired at a group of protesters in the Amazone region of Bolivia. Celedonia Basualdo and Bernardino Racua participated in a protest mars when they and other protesters came into contact with a certain group having allegiances with the local authorities of the Pando department in the north of Bolivia.

2015-Watch report released – Call for Greater Focus on Results
Alliance2015, the network of leading European NGOs, presented its rigorous review of European development aid on Tuesday 16 September to the European Parliament. The 5th annual 2015-Watch report measures the contribution of the European Commission (EC) development aid programmes to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MDGs, set up with clear and measurable targets to fight poverty and to be reached by 2015, will be at the centre of the high-level UN Summit on 25 September.

Emergency aid for agricultural sector in Cuba
Cuba had hardly coped with the impact of hurricane Gustav at the end of August when a new hurricane, Ike, caused severe havoc on the Caribian island. The damages as a result of these hurricanes are set at the estimated 10 billion US dollars. Disturbingly, the agricultural sector has been hit hard, putting the availability of food in jeopardy. Hivos has granted 100,000 Euros for the re-building of the agricultural sector.

Hivos calls for action after imprisonment of Irani activist
Five years ago, Emadedin Baghi was one of the founders of the Society for the Defence of Prisoners Rights (SDPR), and in 2005 he founded two similar organisations in Iran. While SDPR helps Irani prisoners in general, one of the other organisations is involved in helping prisoners who are on death row. Currently Baghi, a well-known human rights activist, is sentenced to three years in prisons. His health condition is growing worse. Hivos calls upon Dutch minister Verhagen to undertake immediate action.

Hivos-partner Yanar Mohammed wins Women's Rights Prize
Yanar Mohammed is one of three courageous activists to have won this year's Gruber International Women's Rights Prize for Advancing Gender Equality. She is praised for her activism for women's rights in Iraq. Yanar Mohammed is the founder and director of Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq, an Hivos-partnerorganization which promotes a secular and egalitarian society that is free from violence and where human rights are enjoyed by all.

Photos Hivos 40 Years Online
This year Hivos celebrated her 40th birthday on Thursday 19 June with an event in the Convention Factory in Amsterdam. More than 500 Hivos relations enjoyed an afternoon and evening full of debates, music and theater. New publication: Food, Feed and Fuels
Many recent trends threaten to reframe global policies on agriculture. These trends include climate change, rapid urbanization, economic growth, increasing meat in the global diet, and decreasing purchasing power of the poor. Recently, rising oil prices, harvest failures, animal diseases and low levels of stock have colluded with the longer-term trends to push food and feed prices upward, bringing the topic of agricultural policies to the fore. UN appoints Frank La Rue as Freedom of Expression Rapporteur
After some last-minute consultation, a very angry-looking Egyptian and a statement by Uruguay strongly supporting his candicacy, Frank La Rue was elected as the new UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression. Hivos believes this is a good choice. La Rue is a strong believer in human rights and freedom of expression and he will have the wherewithal to interpret his new mandate wisely.

Zimbabwe: Civil Society Statement on the June 27 Presidential Run-off
Civil society organisations in Zimbabwe, including several Hivos-partnerorganisations, issued a statement today in which they argue that the presidential run-off scheduled on Friday, June 27, is not free and fair and therefore void of legitimacy. The civil society organisations urge the people of Zimbabwe not to vote, unless doing so in order to protect their own lives or wellbeing. Read the full statement.

Zimbabwe Watch presents letter to president Mbeki of South Africa
Zimbabwe Watch, a coalition of Dutch organisations for development and human rights, wrote a letter to the president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, to urge him to use his influence to help ensure that the Zimbabwean election are free and fair. Manuela Monteiro, general director of Hivos, delivered the letter to the Embassy of South Africa in The Hague on behalf of Zimbabwe Watch. The contents of the letter are as follows.

Police raids center of Hivos-partner Labrys
What started as a cozy dinner between Kyrgyz organisation Labrys and several (inter)national partnerorganisations, among which Hivos, ended in a raid by Kyrgyz police. It was not the first time that police officers entered the community center of LGBT-organisation Labrys. 'Homosexuality may no longer be a crime in Kyrgyzstan but that does not mean it is legal.' Costa Rica declares 17 May as National Day against Homophobia
As of 2008, 17 May is the National Day against Homophobia in Costa Rica. The national day is the result of an active lobby campaign by Hivos-partner CIPAC, an organisation that has been fighting for years for the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in Costa Rica.
